Benevolent Capital was founded in 2005 by Brett and Grant Johnson as their Family Office.
From this initial launch, our platform has expanded to include a world-class group of partners, associates and investors, and our portfolio now spans catalytic investments in venture capital, private equity, real estate development and a diverse collection of global professional soccer franchises.
Before creating a private equity firm, we were operating executives of companies ranging from start-ups to an international company with over $500 million in revenues. Our wide range of experience from managing successful companies, to completing management buyouts, acquisitions, and a wide variety of debt and equity investments totaling over $4 billion enables us to truly partner with the entrepreneurs and management teams of our portfolio companies and provide hands on support and guidance towards realizing their full potential.
Benevolent has a proven track record of successful investments. Most notably, our $200k investment in seed capital for Enzymatics, a biotech firm later ultimately acquired by Invitae (NASDAQ: NVTA), has yielded over $30MM in total returns for Benevolent’s investors.
We invest in profitable, growing small-to-mid market companies with strong business models, records of revenue and earnings growth and the leadership capable of sustaining that growth
We focus on co-investments and syndication in professional sports anchored real estate development & joint-ventures with best-in-class partners.
We focus on partnering with dynamic, scalable platforms which have unique placement within growth industries.
We believe in the social and economic impact inherent in professional sports investments, coupled with the exceptional un-correlated equity appreciation that ownership of the right sports teams, in the right leagues and geographies will provide.
The Benevolent Difference
Benevolent Capital has always approached our relationship with our investors and portfolio partners, as exactly that – benevolent. Unlike traditional funds, we do not charge our investors a management fee, and we provide exceptional preferred returns to our limited partners before taking a promote on our investments. In short, we don’t do well, unless or until, our investors do well.
Whether through a seat on the board, a role in company governance, or an advisory relationship, Benevolent Capital is an active and engaged investor, always seeking to add value and empower the companies in which we invest while enabling our investors to realize robust returns. Benevolent facilitates investor participation by structuring our investments through special purpose vehicles (SPV) that have no attached management fees and present unique opportunities to get in on the ground level of otherwise oversubscribed deals. We have worked with companies at all stages of financing and are always open to expanding our horizons and broadening our network.
